Proficiencies
Choosing the right microphone, knowing just where
to place it, how to process it as each track is laid
down … those are the keys to the foundation of a
great music production … and they are skills that
require a special instinctive talent.
"That gift has also led to my being selected
in 2000 as one of four US Certified Training Centers
for Steinberg, one the leading music production
software manufacturers.
"My specialties are in areas that seem to
connect the dots for many artists, producers, and
creative production teams. It is in finding ways
around, and often outside of the rules of normal
practice that can bring the feel or perfect sound to
a project. It has been said about me that "if
anyone can make it work, it's Scott."
I believe my finest talent lies in instinctively
knowing how to get "the sound." Having
developed an understanding of how sound works, along
with a special "relationship" with the
individual personality of each microphone, preamp,
and processor, I have a particular gift for knowing
the perfect mic to use, just where to place it, and
how to massage the signal as it's captured to the
recording system. I believe that no amount of
processing after the fact can replace the right
recording upfront, and it is only through experience
of knowing how each track needs to sit within the
overall mix, and being able to visualize the feel
and sound desired by the artist and producer that an
engineer can make decisions on how to record them.
There is an art to that process, something that has
been lost in our current world of technology, and is
virtually impossible to teach. As in music training,
there is an element of "feel" involved,
and either it is present in the student waiting to
be brought out, or it is not.
